"During the Civil War, Grandpa Orville Rice Andruss was in the Union Army. Missouri
was unsafe for families, so Grandma (Welthy Jane) took her four children (Harvey,
Mary b. 1854, James and George b. 1860) to Kansas for safety, staying in
Lawrence KS and were there at the time of Quantrill's Raid. My father (George) was
about 3 years old, and he said he remembered they all hid under a bridge during
the raid. Mary said she had only one dress and had to wash and dry it at night!
(She would have been eight or nine years old, so could have had good recall.)" ...Aunt Mary Andruss Taylor, as told to Myrtle Andruss Payne -Merriam Morrison Kokojan, 1983 Orville Rice Andruss Family History |
