Harvey Adolphus Andruss (2) was known as "Dop" to his family. (This nickname
differentiates him from his father, known as "Harvey", and his son, known as
"Harry"--all three of the same legal name. Dop was born in Tennessee near
Russellville, Jefferson Co., in 1836 where he grew up.
In 1856 his sister, Addie, wrote: "It has bin a snowing three days, and it is the deepest snow you ever saw. Dop is at home today for the first time in two months. He has bin a-working with Mr. Wilwretch. He gives him $10 a month. He is a-going to school next summer, and he wants to set in with you and learn the trade next fall. He wants you to wright if there will be a good school next summer." Two years after that Dop was married, and two years after that the couple were living in a boardinghouse in Waverly TX in Walker Co. (I believe that Dop and brother Charles made the migration together, following their sister Margaret. One source said they travelled the rivers from Tennessee to the Louisiana "foot", then across land to Berwick, then by boat again to Galveston.) Both Dop and Charles served the Confederacy in the 20th Texas Infantry, Co. G at the Galveston area. -Merriam Morrison Kokojan, 1985 Andruss Family History |
