Myrtle was a schoolteacher, taught in a country school near Laramie WYO where she
met Walter Payne. They were married in 1925.
Walter was a cowboy and bronc buster. He captured wild horses, broke them and sold them. He tried for years to catch a beautiful wild stallion. He finally caught him, and during the night it tried to jump the high, spiked corral fence and became impaled on it and had to be shot. That ended Walter's wild horse hunting. He loved horses. Myrtle and Walter joined up with the "101 Ranch" show for a year. She rode the educated pony and he the "wild broncos". They traveled with the show to New York City and all over from wintering in Ponca City OK. Walter went into the railroad years as a fireman on the Union Pacific RR, and they lived in the railroad town of Imlay, NV. As a child Myrtle had "pretty yellow hair and big blue eyes." Many thanks to Myrtle for helping me so much in my quest for information. -Merriam Morrison Kokojan, 1983 Orville Rice Andruss Family History |
